A massive Russian overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital has left at least four people dead, over two dozen wounded, and set fire to one of Ukraine’s most sacred spiritual sites—the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery.
Flames and heavy smoke were seen billowing from the UNESCO World Heritage site, which traces its history back nearly 1,000 years. Firefighters fought through the night beneath the towers and domes of the Dormition Cathedral to control the massive blaze.
💥 600+ Drones and Missiles Rain Down on Kyiv
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia launched an unprecedented barrage consisting of 611 long-range strike UAVs and 70 missiles in a single night.
- The Damage: Ukraine’s emergency services confirmed that the fire destroyed over 800 square meters of the roof of the Dormition Cathedral.
- Museum Hit: Another fire broke out at the nearby National Cultural, Art, and Museum Complex, covering an area of 1,000 square meters.
- Blackouts: Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko stated that the strikes knocked out power for roughly 140,000 households in the northern part of the capital.
Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv called for urgent prayers, labeling the attack:
“Another Russian crime against humanity, against history, against Christianity.”
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed it was only targeting “defence-industrial complexes” in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk.
🏛️ A UNESCO ‘Masterpiece’ Under Attack
The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a crucial spiritual and cultural center for Ukrainians and a global pilgrimage site. Founded in the 11th century, it features a complex network of surface and underground churches holding ancient relics of saints.
In 2023, UNESCO added the complex to the World Heritage in Danger list precisely due to the threat of destruction from the Russian offensive.
🤝 Strategic Timing Amid Trump’s Peace Talks
This devastating attack comes immediately after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held crucial talks with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss ending the war, which began over four years ago. Trump also spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin just hours prior on Sunday.
“All Ukrainians have one wish for President Trump: that we may finally achieve peace, and achieve this success together with the US,” Zelensky posted on X.
Following the strike, Zelensky fiercely condemned the bombardment, calling the destruction at the monastery “one of Russia’s most serious crimes against Christian culture to date.
