NEW YORK – Dramatic new details have emerged from law enforcement investigations regarding the illegal climb of Russian daredevil couple Angela Nikolau (33) and Ivan Kuznetsov (32) to the peak of the Empire State Building.

The couple’s determination to stage a “one-of-a-kind” marriage proposal not only put their own lives at risk but also severely disrupted operations for the New York Police Department’s (NYPD) elite emergency units.

How They Did It: Breaking Through the 104th Floor Lock

According to the official criminal complaint filed by prosecutors, the duo monitored the movements of building staff and utilized a designated worker entrance to bypass strict security checkpoints. Once they reached the 104th floor, they broke the lock on a secure door that grants direct access to the skyscraper’s broadcast antenna, 1,454 feet above street level.

Police Delayed by 30 Minutes Due to Radiation Risk

One of the most striking revelations in the police report explains why responders did not immediately arrest the couple at the peak. The Empire State Building’s broadcast antenna emits high-frequency radio signals that are powerful enough to cause severe biological harm to the human body.

To protect the safety of both the responding officers and the climbers, authorities were forced to power down the antenna entirely. First responders had to wait a full 30 minutes for the systems to completely deactivate before they could safely scale the metal structure and take the couple into custody.

Released from Custody: Smiling and Kissing Outside Court

Despite facing heavy criminal charges—including felony burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, and criminal mischief—the newly engaged couple was granted supervised release by a Manhattan judge on Thursday. The defendants did not enter a plea.

“We will do supervised release. We will do it at a low level,” the judge stated during the court appearance.

Leaving the courthouse, Angela and Ivan were spotted wearing the exact same black outfits they wore during their high-altitude stunt. Holding hands and smiling for the global press, they declined to discuss wedding details but paused for a long kiss in front of cameras before heading into a nearby subway station.

“We love New York,” Kuznetsov told reporters, having previously mentioned to detectives that he simply wanted to do “something special” for his engagement. Their defense attorney, Jason Krinsky, argued that prosecutors are overcharging the case just to make an example out of them: “They are trying to send a message. As far as what I’ve seen, it was a message of love. You know, that’s a nice thing.”

The famous internet personalities are scheduled to return to court on August 24.
