Record Cocaine Bust in Australia: Over €500m in Drugs Seized from Underground Bunker

Australian police have executed the largest anti-narcotics operation in the country’s history, seizing a record-breaking 2.7 tonnes of cocaine. The massive haul of illicit drugs was discovered hidden inside a sophisticated underground bunker system in western Sydney.

According to initial estimates by authorities, the street value of the seized narcotics reaches a staggering €500 million ($816 million AUD).

Underground Bunker Discovery and On-Scene Arrests

The major multi-agency operation, code-named “Operation Minjiang,” was finalized on Friday at a property in the Londonderry area. Officers executing the raid discovered that the massive supply of cocaine had been cleverly hidden within secret compartments concealed beneath the false floors of three shipping containers.

During the raid, two young men aged 21 and 25 attempted to flee from the scene on foot but were immediately apprehended and handcuffed by law enforcement. They appeared in court on Saturday and were remanded in custody, facing charges of possessing a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border-controlled drug. If convicted, both men face life in prison.

The Investigation’s Origin: A Floating Package in the Water

This mega-bust did not happen by accident. The investigation originally began in May after a 40kg package of cocaine was found floating in the water near a boat ramp at Midge Point in North Queensland.

This initial discovery served as the catalyst for exposing a highly organized transnational crime network. Police suspect that the massive multi-tonne shipment of cocaine was smuggled into Australia via this small coastal town on the orders of an organized crime group. As part of the broader investigation, six additional people have been arrested across Queensland and New South Wales, while an alleged “mother vessel” used to transport the drugs has been detained in the Solomon Islands.

Why Australia is a Lucrative Target for Drug Cartels

Despite its geographical remoteness, Australia remains one of the most lucrative and highly sought-after markets for international drug traffickers.

  • Premium Street Prices: According to an illegal drug monitoring system run by the University of New South Wales, a single gram of cocaine typically fetches around $300 AUD on the street.
  • Record Consumption Rates: Last year’s UN World Drug Report confirmed that Australians and New Zealanders have the highest rates of cocaine consumption in the entire world.

“This alleged plot shows how highly organised and determined these criminal networks are, and the extreme lengths they are willing to go to in pursuit of profit,” stated Australian Federal Police Commander Stephen Jay.

International and domestic law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigations to fully map out and identify the global criminal syndicates behind this massive attempted import.
