MONACO — A major law enforcement operation is currently underway in Monaco and southern France following an explosion at a residential building in the principality on Monday evening. The incident resulted in injuries to three individuals, including high-profile real estate developer Vadym Yermolaiev.
Monaco Public Prosecutor Stéphane Thibault confirmed that authorities are treating the event as an attempted murder investigation rather than an act of terrorism. Law enforcement agencies are actively tracking a single suspect who was captured on video surveillance footage fleeing the scene on foot toward the neighboring French commune of Beausoleil.
According to official reports, the incident occurred shortly before 21:00 local time at an apartment complex on Rue Révérend Père Louis Frolla, located near the French border. Surveillance images reviewed by investigators show an unidentified individual leaving a backpack in the building’s lobby moments before the detonation.
Investigation and Status of the Victims
The explosion caused structural and material damage to the immediate area, with debris breaking nearby storefront windows. Emergency services deployed more than 100 personnel to the scene within minutes of the blast.
The three primary victims were transported to a specialized medical facility in Nice, France, for treatment. Local reports indicate that among those affected were Yermolaiev, 58, alongside his partner and their teenage son. Four other individuals in the vicinity were treated at the scene for minor cuts and shock caused by flying debris.
Monaco’s Head of Government, Christophe Mirmand, stated that an incident of this nature is unprecedented in the modern history of the principality. Prince Albert II of Monaco released a statement describing the event as a severe crime that has deeply impacted the local community.
Geopolitical and Business Background
Vadym Yermolaiev is a prominent businessman originally from Dnipro, Ukraine, who has resided in Monaco for several years. In 2019, Yermolaiev renounced his Ukrainian citizenship and currently holds Cypriot nationality.
