The devastating twin earthquakes that recently struck Venezuela have left thousands of casualties and a nation in mourning. However, amid the immense tragedy, a heartwarming story of survival is inspiring people worldwide. Dayana Patino and her 18-day-old newborn, Juan David, were pulled alive from the rubble of their destroyed apartment building in La Guaira, in what is being hailed as a “true miracle.”
Speaking from a hospital clinic in Caracas, Dayana shared the terrifying hours she spent trapped underground, explaining how her infant son gave her the strength and motivation to stay alert and fight for survival.
Chronicle of a Tragedy: “I Felt Like I Was Flying and Sinking”
When the powerful seismic shocks hit Venezuela’s northern coastal region, Dayana was in her eighth-floor apartment doing the dishes. Her immediate maternal instinct was to rush and cradle her only son, initially hoping it would be “only a light tremor.”
“I felt like I was flying. After that, I felt like I was sinking in water and dirt, and then I fell into the pit where I remained. I don’t know how I didn’t let go of my baby because I was flying. I got crushed against furniture,” she recalled.
Once the shaking stopped, Dayana found herself trapped beneath concrete, her left leg pinned down and her temple pressed tightly against a rock. After screaming for help and realizing no one could hear her, she made a strategic decision to conserve her energy: she would only shout when she heard footsteps or voices nearby.
A Mother’s Motivation and a Beacon of Hope
During those grueling hours in pitch darkness, the mother’s primary concern was the well-being of her newborn.
- Checking for Life: Every few moments, Dayana would gently touch her baby’s nose to confirm he was still breathing.
- Spiritual Comfort: She noted that finding a Bible beneath her in the debris marked the true beginning of her journey to survival.
- A Glimmer of Light: Through a tiny opening in the wreckage, she managed to spot a pinprick of light that “looked like the moon,” keeping her hopes alive.
A Brother’s Promise and a Dramatic Rescue
Her rescue came after she heard a familiar voice—her brother calling out her name through the ruins. Summoning every ounce of strength left in her lungs, Dayana screamed, “Here I am!”
Her brother’s response was a life-saving vow: “I found you, and I promise you that I won’t leave until I get you out.” True to his word, emergency crews launched a delicate, highly complex rescue operation on Thursday night to free both mother and child.
Miraculously, baby Juan David sustained only minor scratches. Dayana is currently undergoing medical treatment for injuries to both of her legs.
“I Felt Like I Was Born Again”: The Husband’s Reunion
Gerson, Dayana’s husband, had just parked his car outside when the earthquake struck, managing to jump over a fence to safety. When he turned around and saw their apartment building completely flattened, he feared the absolute worst.
Footage of the emotional moment he held his rescued son has moved millions across social media.
“It was indescribable. I thought they were dead. And when I saw my son, I felt like I was born again. I couldn’t believe it… I felt the life come back to me,” Gerson told reporters.
Earthquake Toll and the Determination to Rebuild
The twin earthquakes are being described by officials as the “most brutal natural catastrophe” in Venezuela’s history. The disaster has claimed at least 1,450 lives, with tens of thousands of people still reported missing.
Although the Patino family lost their home, all their belongings, and are still searching for their missing pet dog, they remain resilient. “We lost almost everything but here we are. We will build everything we lost from scratch,” Gerson stated.
