Simon Helberg Reflects on 12 Seasons of Howard Wolowitz and the Magic Behind “The Big Bang Theory”

In a deeply nostalgic episode of The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast, host Jessica Radloff sat down with the one and only Simon Helberg to look back at his 12-year journey playing the unforgettable, retro-styled aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz.

During the extensive conversation, Helberg opened up about his early days on set, how his character evolved, and what it’s like watching his old episodes today through the eyes of his own children.

A Master Class in Dubbing and the “Bazinga” Rhythm

Helberg recently traveled to France and Italy to promote his new AMC series, The Audacity. While there, he experienced firsthand just how massive the global footprint of The Big Bang Theory truly is. Helberg shared a fascinating encounter from a master class in France, where he met the voice actor who dubbed Howard’s voice into French for all 12 seasons [05:57].

“They know more about me in some ways than I do,” Helberg joked, noting that dubbing actors in both France and Italy proudly showed him the exact same scene: the highly technical and emotionally charged sequence where Howard sings to Bernadette in the hospital [07:15]. Helberg emphasized that no matter the language, the distinct comedic rhythm created by showrunner Chuck Lorre remains undeniable worldwide [07:56].

Watching the Early Seasons Through His Children’s Eyes

When asked if he ever goes back to watch old episodes, Helberg revealed that his children are actually obsessed with the spin-off series Young Sheldon [08:39]. However, his daughter has recently started diving into the original Big Bang Theory [09:18].

Helberg admitted that watching the very early seasons with his daughter can feel a bit surreal. “There’s some racy stuff there,” Helberg confessed, laughing about Howard’s aggressively confident, “Lothario” phase before meeting Bernadette [10:13]. He jokingly tells his daughter, “You should watch a later one, once Howard quiets down a little and meets a woman” [10:19]. Despite the character growth, he pointed out that two things remained hilariously constant from the pilot to the finale: the tight pants and the bowl haircut [10:34].

The Turning Point: Meeting Melissa Rauch (Bernadette)

The real shift in Howard’s life happened in Season 3 when he was introduced to Bernadette Rostenkowski, played by Melissa Rauch. Helberg recalled being instantly charmed by Rauch during their very first meeting, noting her incredible comedic timing [23:59].

The writers intentionally used their dynamic to transition Howard from an inappropriate ladies’ man into someone with real humanity [24:43]. Bernadette served as a hilarious “Freudian blend” of a motherly figure and a wife, which completely anchored Howard’s character development for the rest of the series [26:39]. Helberg also fondly recalled filming the iconic scene where Howard dramatically proposes to Bernadette at the Cheesecake Factory after only three dates—a performance he looks back on as a perfect encapsulation of an immature, performative guy desperately trying to make things work [28:32].
