The next chapter of The Big Bang Theory universe is officially here. HBO Max has greenlit a brand-new spin-off series titled “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe”, coming from original co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, alongside Marvel writer Zak Penn.
This marks the fourth television series in the massive franchise and the second direct spin-off of the legendary original sitcom.
The Return of Fan-Favorite Characters
The single-camera comedy series brings back some of the most beloved recurring characters from the original show. Kevin Sussman returns to star as the chronically unlucky comic book store owner, Stuart Bloom.
Joining him on this wild new adventure are:
- Lauren Lapkus as his girlfriend, Denise.
- Brian Posehn as the rock-loving geologist, Bert Kibbler.
- John Ross Bowie reprising his iconic role as the gloriously irritating Barry Kripke.
The Plot: A Multiverse Armageddon
According to the official logline, the series takes a chaotic, sci-fi turn. Stuart is accidentally tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a mysterious device built by Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter. This mistake triggers a literal multiverse Armageddon.
With the universe collapsing, Denise, Bert, and Kripke are forced to join Stuart on a cosmic quest to fix reality.
The series promises wormholes, alternate realities, giant bugs, and multiple different versions of Stuart. True to its title, things will generally not go well for our hapless hero. Co-star Brian Posehn teased the dynamic, saying: “The fun is watching him fail every week.”
Alternate Universes & Release Date
Because the show deals with the multiverse, fans can expect the gang to encounter alternate-universe versions of other beloved Big Bang Theory characters along the way. Adding to the hype, legendary Hollywood composer Danny Elfman has been brought on board to create an original theme song for the show.
“Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” is set to premiere on July 23 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max, with new episodes dropping weekly across its 10-episode first season run.
